Given the recent flurry of posts from BC luthiers, I thought it was high time that I introduced myself. I've been visiting here for a few months now, having been told about the OLF by my friend Dan from Powell River. I live in Cumberland, a small town just outside of Courtenay on the east side of Vancouver Island. Shane, I lived in Usk, just down the road from you for a time in the seventies. Do they still use the reaction ferry and cable car in winter to cross the Skeena river? I started my instrument building career in 1978 by taking Charles Fox's course at GRD in Vermont. I built and repaired guitars for five or six years and then eventually drifted into general woodworking and cabinet making and finally into computer work. I'm still making my living as a computer programmer. In the early ninties I took Richard Schneider's Lost Mountain course and learned some of the Schneider/Kasha techniques. Over time I've never lost the passion for instrument building and for the past few years I've been collecting tools and making new jigs. I'm almost done with MDF now (hurray!) and have just begun making exotic wood dust again. There are a few guitars, a resonator and some Weissenborns on the go. I look forward to being a participating member of this very friendly forum. Scott |

Thanks to all for the kind words of welcome. Regarding my early Fox education, you might say that I had one of the first Fox benders on the block, it was that long ago. I learned from Charles back when flat tops were actually flat! Things have changed quite a bit since then. Lots of new jigs to build. I have yet to to complete a Kasha/Schneider guitar but I've been thinking about building a steel string to their pincipals. I'm not so sure that I'd put the sound hole in the treble upper bout (though it does make a lot of sense) as I don't like the look but the bracing system sure is interesting. We need a bunch of us in western Canada if we are to have a hope of balancing the posting output of Serge to the east! |

Hi Scott from another fellow Canadian. As far as Canada goes I think it's pretty balanced between B.C. and Ontario/Quebec. Funny I haven't seen to many from Alberta, none from Saskatchewan or Manitoba and not sure about Atlantic Canada.... It's great to see all the country diversity here: - U.S. - majority - Canada - growing number - U.K. - more than 5? - Australia - 3? - Norway - 2? - Holland - 2? - Italy - 1 - Countries missed? |
